BitComet is a powerful downloading tool that supports the BitTorrent, HTTP and FTP protocols. Though most famous for its ability to participate in BitTorrent traffic, its features as a download manager are rather substantial.
Useful features of BitComet include:
- Download Resuming: On servers that support it, BitComet is able to pause a download and resume it later. This is accomplished by saving where the transfer left off and issuing a new command to the server with that value.
- Integration: BitComet can act as the download manager for a number of external programs, such as Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Maxthon and Cometbird.
- The ability to download the beginning and end of a file first is provided. This is useful if you wish to preview a media file before it has finished downloading.
- Magnet Mode: This allows BitComet to use a "magnet URL" to locate trackers, torrent data, seeds and peers.
- .torrent File Mode: This uses a downloaded .torrent file to determine trackers to use. It also reads out the listing of files and their sizes.
- Selective Downloading: When a torrent is loaded, the user can select which files he or she wishes to download. This is especially useful for very large and comprehensive torrents.
BitComet also includes an FLV file viewer. This allows flash videos, such as those used on YouTube, Blip and Springboard, to be viewed offline. It is also possible to use BitComet as a BitTorrent tracker. This allows your computer to facilitate communications between persons with different amounts of a desirable file. In order to accomplish this, the computer running the tracker software must be accessible to incoming connections. This can be configured in a software firewall or hardware NAT, such as those found in routers and cable modems.
BitComet is available for Windows in over 50 languages.
